Washington Post YouTube traffic

September 18, 2013 Jim Leave a Comment

This morning I was looking at the SonicWall real-time monitor, and I noticed 1 Mb/s of YouTube traffic. I started closing tabs on my browser, and the traffic ceased when I closed the Washington Post tab. I opened a new tab to the Post home page, and the traffic started again. After about three minutes, it stopped.

I saw no obvious video on the web page while all this was going on, but it’s a long page, and I didn’t scroll all the way to the bottom.

There’s a lesson here for people administering bandwidth-constrained networks. You can invoke a video feed without meaning to.
