MelGeek MADE84 OOBE

April 10, 2025 Jim Leave a Comment

Nice looking keyboard.

Hall Effect actuation, which is really nice in my option. Came with Windows keys installed, but with some Mac keys and a key puller. I installed the Mac keys in the right places and fired it up. The Mac/PC OS toggle appeared to do nothing. I double checked the quick start manual, and it visited the key combination to toggle the OS as Fn-S. But there was no indication that anything changed when I pressed that combination, and the key mapping was wrong.

I went to the MelGeek (where do they get these names?) website, and there was no manual for the MADE84 keyboard. I sent an email to MelGeek support asking why the key mapping appeared to be wrong in both OS modes. I got an answer saying that the default configuration for that keyboard did not include OS switching, in spite of what the quick start manual that came with the keyboard said. I used the weg configurator app to make the proper key assignment.

But that didn’t help. I can’t tell if the OS toggle does anything (it really ought to be idempotent) and the key mapping was wrong in either position. In addition, the Control and Option keys did not appear as assignments in the web app, so I couldn’t assign them to any keys.

After a few days of back and forthing with MelGeek support, I gave up and gave away the keyboard to a Windows user. I suspuect it will work much better there.

I guess it was worth a try.
