I downloaded and tried to install the 64-bit version of Office PP 2013. The install failed with the following message:
I downloaded the 32-bit version. It looks like, just as in the case of Windows, that Microsoft hasn’t figured out a way to make the upgrade to the larger address space easy.
Installation went smoothly, although it took about ten minutes. The installer requested a reboot upon completion. What’s that all about? There’s no reboot required when you use the web install.
Then I downloaded and installed Visio 2013 (the executable, not the web installation program). Again, no problems.
It looks like my earlier woes were due to some kind of incompatibility between the web installed versions of Office 365 and Visio 2013. What kind of incompatibility is hard to say. The web installers don’t give the user much information. They don’t show download speeds. They don’t show expected time to completion. They don’t even tell you whether they’re installing 32-bit or 53-bit versions of the software. I have complained before about the “Applezation” of Microsoft over the last year or so. In their pursuit of a simplified user experience, they are becoming just as opaque as Apple ever was. I, for one, don’t think that’s a good thing.
By the way, the Norton ribbon add-in is not compatible with Outlook 2013 at present.
