This is a continuation of my report on my “out of box experience” with the Dell T7910.
The report starts here.
I fired up the computer today. No smoke, no bad smells, and, so far, now BSODs.
I was able to join it to the domain with the same name as the old workstation, which is something that has given me trouble in the past. Here’s how I did it:
- Joined the computer to the domain with its Dell-supplied name.
- Logged on to the server, and removed the LordRobert from Active Directory Users and Computers.
- Changed the name of the new computer to LordRobert.
I could have just sacrificed the name LordRobert, but I’m running out of Downton Abbey names — I use the gentry for workstations, and the servants for servers.
The AMD W8100 in the new computer won’t allow my to use resolutions greater than 1920×1080, even though the monitor is capable of 2560×1600. It’s probably some cabling issue. I noticed that the Device Manager has the wrong model number for the monitor. Since I’ll eventually be using LordRobert with a 4K NEC 32 inch monitor, I’m not going to worry about it for now.
One annoying thing: the Microsoft web browser keeps silently making itself the default web browser, and the OS launches it by default even if it’s not the default browser. I’ll have to figure out a way to defeat that.
I can’t seem to find a controller app for the Dell PERC RAID controller. Looking at the device manager (by the way, Cortana can’t find the device manager), I see that the controller is actually made by Avago.
I installed Office 365 from the Microsoft web site. It’s very painless once you realize that there are two Microsoft sites the bill themselves as the place to manage Office 365, and only one will work for you, depending on what kind of account you have.
There’s a lot of work ahead.
