Barracuda failures — preemption or not?

November 17, 2014 Jim Leave a Comment

The two recent 3 TB Barracuda failures on one of my Synology NAS boxes, bringing the total to four dead disks in 27 months, has made me think that this particular school of Barracudas might well have a common wear mechanism, and that the other four may fail soon, possibly — if they fail within a few days of each other — with loss of data.

Therefore, I’ve ordered some 4 TB WD NAS-rated drives. I’ll swap them into the Synology NAS one at a time, and throw the last of the Barracudas back into the digital sea.
