A Synology 1812+ glitch

February 25, 2014 Jim Leave a Comment

Remember this post about a Synology 1812+ failure? Well, today I had another one. Well, it wasn’t the same, really. This was a transient failure. I noticed that backups weren’t completing. It took me a while to find the NAS box with the problem, since I’d neglected to label all the Synology boxes with their names and IP addresses. I’ve since fixed that. When I found the right box, everything looked normal except the system status light was off. It turns out that “off” means “HDD hibernation” so that’s not really an indication that there’s anything wrong.

I tried to ping it. No dice. I double checked the LED status lights. The LAN ones were solid green, indicating readiness for, but no current LAN activity. The disk ones were also solid green, indicating readiness for, but no disk activity. I tried the Synology Assistant. It couldn’t find the box, but then again, it couldn’t find one that was working just fine, either.

I tried to do a soft shutdown from the front panel, by holding down the power button briefly. It started blinking, which was a good sign, since that means it’s either shutting down or starting up. But it kept on blinking. And blinking. And blinking. After fifteen minutes, I leaned on the power button until the lights all went off, then hit it against and saw the blinking blue light that meant it was rebooting.

The system came back up and reported that it was fine, except for the “improper shutdown.”

I updated to OS from 4.1 to 4.3. Can’t hurt, might help.

I don’t think that’s going to be the end of it, though.

While I was at it, I decided to upgrade all the other Synology OSs. All went well except for one box that complained thusly:

I know the connection from the local network to the box in question is fine, because I can get to it from a web browser, and I can ping it. I know the local network connects fine to the Internet because everything else that depends on the Internet works fine, plus all the other Synology OS upgrades went smoothly. So what’ special about this box? I dunno. A reboot didn’t fix things. I did a manual upgrade. After the upgrade, it still isn’t happy with the network connection:
