Backing up to Google Drive

September 14, 2014 Jim Leave a Comment

Next on my list of cloud storage providers was Google Drive. It’s easy to sign up if you already have a Google account. Goodsync supports it.

I set up a test backup job in Goodsync. Initially I got an error:

Stillno fs

It looks like Goodsync is changing the gdocs:// URL header to gdoc://. I tried reentering the URL, but it kept on dropping the final s in the header. I deleted that job and started a new one. Finally the header stuck. I entered my Google username. Since I already had Google Drive open in a browser window, no one ever asked me to reenter my password. I saw this in the browser:

gs permissions

I said OK, hit the Analyze button in Goodsync, and saw that the 15 GB of space you get for free wasn’t enough:

not enough space

I removed a folder from the source list, and now had enough space:

enough space now

Then I hit the Sync button in Goodsync, and took a look at the firewall to see how fast things were progressing:

google drive performance

Egress is uploading. Only about 4 Mb/s, and that’s with an average file size of about 100 MB. That’s not going to do it for me.
