Moving Photoshop plugins to CS6

May 15, 2012 Jim 1 Comment

I upgraded from Adobe CS6 Design Premium to Adobe CS6 Design Premium a few days ago. The upgrade appeared to go well. I ran Photoshop CS6 successfully for two days. It looked pretty solid, so I set about moving my plugins over to the new version. I know, I know, I should really find the installers for all the plugins, find the serial numbers, and rerun the installers. Just copying the plugins to the right directories in the new version works most of the time, and I’m lazy sometimes.

Then I didn’t use Photoshop for a couple of days, and forgot what I’d done with the plugins.

Today, upon trying to open a TIFF file in PSCS6 from Lightroom 4, I got this message.

The error message was followed by Photoshop trying to open, but failing with an endless spinning patience icon. I couldn’t close PS. I couldn’t minimize it. I couldn’t get to my desktop. I gave the computer the old three finger salute, started the task manager, and killed PS.

What’s this onOne thing? Oh, yes, they make a bunch of the plugins I copied over. I took the plugins out, and things worked fine. It looks like the problem was occurring when Photoshop was trying to register the onOne plugins and couldn’t find the path to the common dll.

I looked for a CS6 compatible version of the onOne Suite. I couldn’t find one, so I downloaded it from the onOne web site. I looked for a serial number for the latest version. I didn’t find one. Back to the onOne site for an upgrade purchase.

All is well now. I wish there were an easier way to port plugins to upgraded versions of Photoshop. Just so you’re clear if something similar happens to you: the message comes from Photoshop, because it’s the program trying to register the plugins, but the program it’s talking about reinstalling is not Photoshop, it’s onOneCoreFoundation.dll. To reinstall that program, you need to run the onOne installer.
